Yilin Verse

左輔右弼,金玉滿櫃;常盈不亡,富如敖倉。

Aided left and right; gold and jade fill the coffers. Always abundant, never depleted -- rich as the Ao Granary.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder rests within the lake, and loyal counselors stand at left and right. With competent ministers flanking the throne, gold and jade fill the coffers. Wealth accumulates ceaselessly, rich as the great Ao Granary — the massive Qin-dynasty storehouse at Xingyang that became a strategic prize in the Chu-Han wars. The verse pictures ideal governance as a structure of mutual support: ruler follows good counsel, ministers follow a worthy lord. From Following to Difficulty at the Beginning, the pattern shifts from harmony to the perilous birth of new order — yet the wealth and loyalty described here are precisely the resources needed to weather the storm of Zhun's gathering clouds and thunder.
