Yilin Verse
負金懷玉,南歸嘉國;蜂蠆不螫,利入我室。
Bearing gold, carrying jade, returning south to a fine land; wasps and scorpions do not sting -- profit enters my house.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder rests within the lake, and the traveler carries gold on his back and jade against his breast, heading south toward a blessed homeland. Wasps and scorpions do not sting; profit enters the household unimpeded. The verse is a traveler's auspice of safe return with treasure — the road is free of venomous hazards, and wealth flows home. Southward movement is auspicious, associated with warmth and the fire trigram. From Following to Progress, fire emerges above the earth at dawn, the sun climbing the horizon. The safe journey southward mirrors Jin's dynamic of ascending illumination: following the proper direction with valuable cargo, one advances into the light without obstruction.
