Yilin Verse

依踞甲鎧,敝筐受貝。大人不顧,少婦不取,棄捐於道。

Leaning on armor and breastplate, a worn basket receives cowrie shells. The great man does not look; the young wife will not take it -- abandoned on the road.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder rests within the lake, and a figure leans against armor and battle-gear while a tattered basket holds cowrie shells. Yet neither the great man nor the young woman takes any notice — the treasure and the equipment are abandoned on the road. The verse paints a scene of valuables discarded: armor that once protected, currency that once bought loyalty, all cast aside and ignored. What should be followed — strength and wealth — finds no one willing to claim it. From Following to Coming to Meet, heaven's wind sweeps below in Gou, the unexpected encounter. Yet here the meeting is one of indifference: the encounter with abandoned value produces no uptake, and opportunity lies forsaken in the dust.
