Yilin Verse
泉坑復平,宇室安寧;憂患解除,賴福長生。
The sinkhole filled, the ground leveled again; house and hall are at peace. Worries and troubles removed -- blessed with fortune, long life.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder rests within the lake, and a pit-spring that once threatened the foundation is leveled smooth. The dwelling regains its peace; anxiety and affliction are dispelled. Blessed by fortune, one lives long. The image is architectural restoration: a dangerous sinkhole beneath the house — source of structural instability — is filled in and flattened. What was undermining from below is neutralized. From Following to the Cauldron, fire above wood in Ding cooks and transforms raw material into refined nourishment. The verse captures the moment when following the right corrective action — literally filling the threatening void — allows the household to become Ding's vessel of transformation, where danger is alchemized into lasting wellbeing.
