Yilin Verse
昧視無光,夜不見明;冥抵空床,季葉逃亡。
Dim-sighted and without light; night offers no brightness. Groping blindly, I strike an empty bed -- the youngest son has fled.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind beneath the mountain plunges into total darkness, and the transformation erupts as thunder rising from the earth — the mobilizing energy of Enthusiasm. Vision fails to perceive any light; night reveals no brightness. Groping blindly, one reaches only an empty bed, as the last of the line flees into exile. The imagery is of complete sensory deprivation and domestic abandonment — the household gutted, the heir vanished. From Work on the Decayed to Enthusiasm, the darkest moment precedes the thunderclap. When corruption has extinguished every lamp, the only way forward is the seismic release of thunder bursting from the ground — a shock that clears the stale air and awakens what has fallen into stupor.
