Yilin Verse
舉趾振翼,南至嘉國;見我伯姊,與惠相得。
Lifting feet and spreading wings, flying south to a fine land; there I find my eldest sister, and we share kindness and contentment.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind beneath the mountain lifts its wings, and the transformation glides into the lake harboring thunder — the willing submission of Following. Raising feet and spreading wings, one flies south to a blessed land. There one meets an elder sister, and together they share kindness and mutual regard. The bird-flight imagery suggests joyful migration rather than desperate exile — a voluntary departure toward better circumstances. From Work on the Decayed to Following, the corrupted situation is left behind through willing movement. Thunder resting within the lake represents the acceptance of natural rhythms: as day follows night, one follows the season and finds companionship in a gentler country.
