Yilin Verse
心多恨悔,出言為怪;梟鳴室北,醜聲可惡。請謁不得。
Heart full of resentment and regret; words uttered sound monstrous. An owl cries at the northern eave -- its ugly voice is loathsome. Petitions go unheard.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind beneath the mountain breeds regret and strange utterances, and the transformation settles into the enduring bond of thunder and wind — Duration. The heart is full of resentment and remorse; words spoken become monstrous. An owl hoots from the north side of the house — its ugly cry repels all who hear. Petitions and requests go unanswered. The owl's inauspicious cry from the household's dark quarter symbolizes speech turned toxic: words born from bitterness that drive others away rather than drawing them near. From Work on the Decayed to Duration, the challenge is to endure without poisoning one's own voice. Thunder and wind reinforce each other perpetually — but if the wind carries only resentment, duration becomes a curse rather than a virtue.
