Yilin Verse

公無長驅,大王駿馬;非其當所,傷折為害。

Do not drive the king stallion recklessly; it is not the proper course -- injury and fracture bring harm.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind beneath the mountain sends the chariot careening, and the transformation settles as wind emerging from fire — the domestic order of the Family. Do not drive the king's fine horse at full gallop — it is not in its proper place, and injuries will follow. The warning is against misapplying power: a splendid horse driven recklessly in the wrong terrain breaks legs and shatters harness. Strength misplaced causes more damage than weakness. From Work on the Decayed to the Family, the remedy for institutional corruption begins at home. Wind from fire means that words must carry substance and actions must have constancy. The spirited horse must be returned to its proper stable before it can serve well — order radiates outward only from a centered domestic foundation.
