Yilin Verse
管鮑相知,至德不離;三言相桓,齊國以安。
Guan and Bao knew each other deeply; their perfect virtue never parted. With three words they steadied Duke Huan -- the state of Qi was at peace.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth above the lake rises to heaven joined with fire — the Fellowship of kindred spirits. Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya understood each other with supreme virtue, their bond unbreakable. With three counsels they established Duke Huan's hegemony, and the state of Qi found peace. The friendship of Guan and Bao is one of the most celebrated in Chinese tradition: Bao Shuya recognized Guan Zhong's genius despite his poverty and failures, recommending him to Duke Huan even over himself. Guan Zhong then transformed Qi into the foremost power of the Spring and Autumn period. From Approach to Fellowship, the elder's oversight becomes mutual recognition among equals. Fire and heaven unite: true fellowship is not hierarchy but the meeting of kindred brilliance that illuminates an entire era.
