Yilin Verse
安樂几筵,未出王門。
At ease on bench and banquet mat, never venturing beyond the king gate.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth above the lake settles into thunder resting within the lake — Following's contented repose. Comfortable and at ease upon bench and banquet mat, one has not yet stepped beyond the king's gate. The verse is remarkably brief, capturing a single moment of domestic peace: the official rests in the palace, well-fed and undisturbed, with no reason to venture out. From Approach to Following, the elder's active oversight yields to willing rest. Thunder dormant within the lake is the image of retreat at nightfall — the gentleman turns toward darkness and enters into rest. Authority relaxes its grip, and what follows is not disorder but tranquility: the contentment of staying exactly where one belongs.
