Yilin Verse
長生無極,子孫千億;柏柱載青,堅固不傾。
Ancient vine wraps around stone, new leaves every year. Roots a hundred fathoms deep — thunder and rain cannot shake it.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth above the lake meets wind moving across the earth — Contemplation's broad survey. The original verse reads: 'Long life without limit, descendants in the thousands. Cypress pillars stay green, firm and never toppling.' Evergreen timber and endless progeny — the verse celebrates permanence through deep roots. The cypress, which keeps its color through winter, embodies the constancy that sustains a lineage across generations. From Approach to Contemplation, the elder's direct oversight transforms into the far-reaching gaze of the sage-king who surveys his realm. Wind across the earth carries influence to every corner: the deeply rooted house needs no forceful rule, for its example — like the cypress — stands visible to all who observe.
