Yilin Verse
鳧游江海,沒行千里;以為死亡,復見空桑。長生樂鄉。
The wild duck swims the rivers and seas, diving a thousand miles; presumed dead, it reappears at Hollow Mulberry. Long life in a land of joy.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth above the lake meets the lake gathered upon earth — the natural congregation of Gathering. A wild duck swims the rivers and seas, diving beneath the surface for a thousand li. Presumed dead, it reappears at the hollow mulberry tree — the mythological birthplace of the sun. Long life in a land of joy. The duck's submarine journey across vast distances, given up for lost and then miraculously resurfacing at the cosmic origin-point, enacts death and rebirth. The hollow mulberry (Kong Sang) is where the ten suns bathe before their daily journey. From Approach to Gathering, scattered energies converge at a sacred center. What seemed lost was merely traveling underground, gathering itself for reemergence at the source of all light.
