Yilin Verse
匏瓠之恩,一畝千室。萬國都邑,北門有福。
By the grace of the gourd, one acre shelters a thousand households. Ten thousand states and their capitals -- the northern gate bestows its blessing.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth above the lake rises to wind above the mountain — Development's gradual, organic growth. The blessing of the gourd vine: from a single mu, a thousand chambers grow. All the states' capital cities receive fortune through the northern gate. The gourd (pao-hu) is a symbol of prolific abundance — from one planting, innumerable fruits emerge. The verse traces exponential growth from a single seed to metropolitan prosperity. From Approach to Development, the lake's immediate nurturing extends into the tree's patient upward growth on the mountainside. Wind above the mountain carries seeds gradually to new heights. The gourd's thousand chambers from one acre embody Development's core principle: great things grow slowly from small, well-tended beginnings.
