Yilin Verse

Qilin and Luji graze on duckweed grass, roaming at ease by the Stone Gate; wandering the hills high and low, they never lose their place.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Earth above the lake meets thunder and fire together — the brilliant fullness of Abundance. Fine steeds Qilin and Luer graze on duckweed, wandering freely at Stone Gate, roaming up and down the mountains, never losing their place. Qilin and Luer are names associated with legendary horses — possibly among King Mu of Zhou's eight famous steeds. Their unhurried grazing at Stone Gate evokes perfect freedom within natural limits. From Approach to Abundance, the lake's nurturing presence ignites into thunder-and-lightning brilliance. Yet this abundance manifests not as accumulation but as the freedom of magnificent creatures at ease in their landscape. They range without constraint yet never stray: abundance as the liberty to move fully within one's proper domain.
