Yilin Verse
龍鬭時門,失理傷賢。內畔外賊,則生禍難。
Dragons battle at the seasonal gate; reason is lost, the worthy harmed. Rebellion within, raiders without; then calamity and trouble arise.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth upon earth transforms into water above lake — Limitation. Dragons battle at the gate of time, and reason is lost while the worthy are harmed. Internal rebellion and external brigandage produce calamity and hardship. Water above lake, the image of Jie, represents proper limits — the gentleman measures and deliberates before acting. Yet the verse depicts what happens when limits collapse: dragons fighting at the threshold signify power struggles at the boundary of order, internal and external threats converging simultaneously. From the Receptive to Limitation, the earth's boundless acceptance must learn to set boundaries. When it fails to do so, dragons contest the gates, loyal ministers suffer, and enemies breach the walls from both sides. Limitation is not restriction but survival — without it, chaos enters from every direction.
