Yilin Verse

鰥寡獨宿,憂動胸臆;莫與宿食。

Bereft and alone, sleeping without a partner; worry stirs within the breast -- with none to share a meal or rest.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind over earth contemplates a scene of utter solitude. A widower sleeps alone, grief stirring in his chest, with no one to share a meal or a night's rest. The verse is stark domestic desolation — not grand tragedy but the quiet erosion of a life without companionship. Thunder bursting from the earth forms Enthusiasm, which moves through joy and communal celebration. From Contemplation to Enthusiasm, the contrast is poignant: the hexagram that should inspire collective exuberance meets a solitary figure for whom joy is inaccessible. Enthusiasm requires community; the widower's isolation makes the thunder within the earth a tremor felt by no one.
