Yilin Verse

麟趾龍身,日取三千;南上蒼梧,與福為昏。道里夷易,安全無患。

Qilin hooves and dragon body, daily acquiring three thousand; southward ascending Cangwu, it weds with fortune. The road is smooth and easy -- safe and free from peril.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind over earth contemplates an auspicious journey southward. A creature with a qilin's hooves and a dragon's body earns three thousand a day, then travels south to Cangwu — the remote southern region where Emperor Shun died and was buried — and there weds good fortune itself. The road is smooth and level; safety prevails without danger. Cangwu, at the far reaches of civilization, represents the ultimate boundary. The qilin-dragon hybrid merges two supreme auspicious symbols. From Contemplation to Holding Together, the transformation shows how careful observation identifies the bonds worth forming: water upon earth gathers naturally, and the one who reads the signs correctly finds alliance even at the edge of the known world.
