Yilin Verse

公悅嫗喜,孫子俱在;榮譽日登,福祿來處。

The lord is pleased, the lady rejoices; sons and grandsons are all present. Honor and fame ascend day by day; blessing and fortune come to dwell.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire and thunder once enforced the law through sharp correction, and now the harvest of that justice arrives. The elder couple beam with pleasure, grandchildren all present and accounted for. Honor and reputation climb daily; blessings and fortune flow toward the household. The verse is a portrait of multigenerational flourishing — the reward for a life well-governed. From Biting Through to Progress, fire rises above the earth as the sun at dawn, illuminating virtue for all to see. The transformation from judicial severity to natural advancement captures the fullness of a completed cycle: once obstacles are cleared and order established, recognition and prosperity rise like sunlight breaking over the horizon.
