Yilin Verse

三足俱行,傾危善僵。六指不使,慁累弟兄。樹柱閡車,失其正當。

Three legs walking together, prone to topple and fall. Six fingers one cannot use; a burden and trouble to one's brothers. A pillar set to block the cart; it loses its proper course.

Commentary

Fire beneath the mountain exposes structural deformity. Three legs walking together topple and fall prone. Six fingers on a hand are useless, burdening one's brothers. A pillar planted in the road blocks the carriage, losing its proper function. Every image here is of excess that impedes rather than helps: the extra leg unbalances, the extra finger encumbers, the misplaced pillar obstructs. From Grace to Influence, the mountain descends beneath the lake. Influence (Xian) is about genuine mutual response — the lake above, the mountain below, moisture descending while the mountain receives. But the verse shows connection gone wrong: superfluities that create burden rather than resonance. True influence requires reduction to essentials, not accumulation of useless parts.
