Yilin Verse

啞啞笑喜,與歡飲酒。長樂行觴,千秋起舞。拜受大福。

Babbling laughter and delight; drinking wine with joy. In the Hall of Lasting Happiness, passing the cup; dancing through a thousand autumns. Bowing, they receive great blessings.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder beneath heaven gives way to pure joyous celebration. Laughter rings out — the sound of delighted voices chattering. Friends gather to drink wine together. In the Hall of Lasting Joy they pass the cup; with cries of 'ten thousand years' they rise to dance. All bow and receive great blessings. From Innocence to Treading, the transformation reveals how spontaneous sincerity, when perfectly aligned with propriety, produces effortless grace. Lu's image of heaven above the lake establishes the proper distinction between high and low, and within that clear structure, celebration flows freely. The verse's unforced joy embodies Wuwang at its best — fortune arriving without contrivance, received with the natural ease of a well-ordered world.
