Yilin Verse
東家中女,嫫母㝡醜。三十無室,媒伯勞苦。
The eastern neighbor's middle daughter; ugly as Mo Mu herself. At thirty still without a household; the matchmaker toils in vain.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
The middle daughter from the eastern household is ugly as Mo Mu — the legendarily homely consort of the Yellow Emperor. At thirty she remains unmarried, and the matchmakers exhaust themselves in vain. From Innocence to Enthusiasm, the transformation is sharply ironic. Yu's image of thunder bursting from the earth should herald joyous celebration — the ancient kings made music to honor virtue. Yet here the anticipated festivity stalls: the bride cannot be placed, and the matchmakers labor without result. The verse inverts Wuwang's promise that sincerity naturally attracts its match, suggesting that even innocence cannot overcome the world's shallow judgments of outward form.
