Yilin Verse
亂危之國,不可涉域。機發身頓,遂至僵覆。
A kingdom in chaos and peril; one must not enter its borders. The trap springs, the body falls; ending in ruin and collapse.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
A state in chaos and danger — one must not enter its territory. The mechanism triggers and the body falls; one is brought to utter ruin. From Innocence to Progress, the transformation is starkly cautionary. Jin's image of fire rising above the earth should signify the bright advancement of virtue openly displayed. Yet the verse warns that advancing into a disordered land invites destruction — the trap springs, and the body hits the ground. Wuwang's teaching about innocent misfortune here becomes tactical: progress demands discernment about where to advance. Not every bright horizon welcomes the traveler; some illuminations reveal killing fields rather than opportunity.
