Yilin Verse

轉禍為福,喜來入屋。春成夏囤,可以飲食。保全家室。

Misfortune turns to blessing; joy comes entering the house. Spring yields, summer stores; there is food and drink enough. The whole household is kept safe.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven stored within the mountain descends into the receptive earth: accumulated power yields to yielding itself. Misfortune turns to fortune as joy enters the household. Spring brings growth, summer stores the harvest, and there is food and drink enough to sustain the whole family. Great Taming's discipline — patient accumulation over time — finds its reward when the mountain releases heaven into earth's generous embrace. The verse paints a domestic idyll: seasonal labor rewarded, the household complete and provided for. From Great Taming to the Receptive, the transformation enacts the very principle of conservation: what was held within the mountain now nourishes all below, as heaven's energy flows into earth's boundless capacity to receive and sustain.
