Yilin Verse

不直杜公,與我爭訟。媒伯無禮,自令塞壅。

The crooked Duke Du contends with me in litigation. The matchmaker lacks propriety, bringing only obstruction and blockage upon himself.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven stored within the mountain becomes thunder moving under heaven — Innocence. An unjust Master Du brings lawsuits against me. The matchmaker acts without propriety, bringing only obstruction upon himself. The verse paints a picture of entanglement with dishonest people who twist institutions — courts and marriage brokers — to serve their own ends. From Great Taming to Innocence, the mountain's stored heaven should become the thunder of heaven's spontaneous action, free from calculation. But the verse warns: when intermediaries act without integrity, innocence is corrupted at the source. The man who accumulates virtue still faces those who weaponize the very structures meant to serve justice. True innocence survives, but not without friction.
