Yilin Verse

窗牖戶旁,道利明光。賢智輔聖,仁施大行。家給人足,海內殷昌。

Windows and doors beside the wall; the way is bright with profit and light. The wise and worthy assist the sage; benevolence is broadly practiced. Every household has enough, every person is content; within the seas all prosper.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven stored within the mountain gives way to earth above wind — Pushing Upward. Light pours through the windows and doorways, illuminating the path. The wise and virtuous assist the sage; benevolence spreads far and wide. Every household is provided for; the realm within the four seas prospers and flourishes. This is governance at its finest — accumulated wisdom deployed as institutional light. The windows represent transparency; the sage surrounded by worthy counselors represents merit properly employed. From Great Taming to Pushing Upward, the mountain's stored heaven becomes wind growing within the earth, trees pushing slowly skyward. The transformation enacts the principle: what was stored now rises organically, building great height from small, steady increments of virtue and good governance.
