Yilin Verse

東家凶婦,怒其公姑。毀柈破盆,棄其飯飱。使吾困貧。

The fierce wife of the eastern house rages at her parents-in-law. She smashes plates and breaks basins; casts away their meals. She leaves us destitute and poor.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Mountain over thunder, the careful jaws, gives way to heaven and water pulling apart in conflict. The eastern neighbor's vicious wife rages at her parents-in-law, smashing plates and breaking basins, discarding the family's food and leaving the household destitute. Every element connects to nourishment perverted: the vessels that hold food are shattered, the meals themselves are thrown away, and the result is poverty. The wife who should nourish the family instead destroys its sustenance. From Nourishment to Conflict, the transformation is visceral. When the mouth that should feed instead spews anger, the entire household economy collapses into litigation and ruin.
