Yilin Verse
綏德孔明,履祿久長,貴且有光,疾病憂傷。
Cultivating virtue, brilliantly wise; treading the path of fortune, enduring and long. Noble and resplendent; yet illness and sorrow attend.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Doubled fire meets thunder above heaven: brilliance expands into magnificent power. One cultivates virtue with great clarity, treading the path of enduring prosperity — noble and radiant. Yet the verse closes with 'illness and sorrowful distress,' undercutting the splendor. The phrase 'Sui De Kong Ming' evokes the idea of cultivating virtue with Kongming (great brightness), which resonates with the doubled fire of Li. From The Clinging to Great Power, fire's clarity meets thunder roaring above heaven. Great power amplified by fire becomes almost unbearably bright, and the verse warns that even the most magnificent rise carries within it the seed of exhaustion. Radiance pushed to its zenith inevitably encounters decline, and the illness that follows glory is the body's protest against a brilliance that burned too hot.
