Yilin Verse
十窗多明,道里通利,仁智君子,國安不僵。
Ten windows, much brightness; the roads run smooth and clear. The benevolent, wise gentleman; the state rests secure, never rigid.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
A lake rests upon a mountain, the image of Influence: openness invites resonance. Ten windows flood a hall with light, and the roads run clear in every direction. A ruler of wisdom and benevolence presides, and the state stands firm, never rigidly paralyzed. The verse celebrates a governance so open that clarity penetrates from all sides, like a house with abundant windows. The ten openings suggest the breadth of virtuous counsel received. From Influence to the Creative, the mountain's receptive stillness transforms into heaven's self-generating initiative: mutual responsiveness, once cultivated through humility, becomes the engine of ceaseless self-strengthening. The gentleman who opens himself to others finds that their influence does not weaken him but ignites his own creative power.
