Yilin Verse
王良善御,伯樂知馬,周旋步驟,行中規矩,止息有節,延命壽考。
Wang Liang excels at driving; Bo Le knows horses. Circling and pacing, their gait follows compass and square. Halting and resting with proper measure; life is prolonged, old age attained.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven above the mountain erupts into thunder above earth — Enthusiasm's joyful momentum. Wang Liang excels at driving chariots; Bole recognizes fine horses at a glance. They circle and pace, advancing and halting, every movement conforming to the compass and square. Rest comes at proper intervals, and life is prolonged in good health. Wang Liang was the legendary charioteer; Bole the supreme judge of horses. Together they represent the perfect pairing of talent and recognition, skill and discernment. From Retreat to Enthusiasm, the mountain's withdrawal gives way to thunder breaking from the earth — stored energy released in measured bursts. The verse celebrates mastery that emerges from disciplined retreat: stepping back, studying the rhythm, then re-engaging with perfect timing. Enthusiasm here is not recklessness but calibrated joy.
