Yilin Verse
登高望時,見樂无憂,求利南國,與寶相得。
Climbing high to survey the season; seeing joy, free from worry. Seeking profit in the southern kingdom; finding treasure in return.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven above the mountain illuminates as thunder over fire — Abundance, where brilliance and movement unite at their peak. Climbing high to survey the times, one sees joy without worry. Seeking profit in the southern lands, one obtains treasure in return. The verse celebrates the elevated perspective that retreat provides: from the mountaintop, the world below reveals its opportunities. The south was traditionally the direction of abundance and warmth in Chinese cosmology. From Retreat to Abundance, the mountain's withdrawal becomes the thunderbolt that ignites the fire of fullness. The retreating figure climbs high not to escape but to see clearly, and what he sees is opportunity. Abundance here rewards the one who withdrew far enough to gain perspective — the panoramic view that reveals where treasure lies hidden.
