Yilin Verse

桃李花實,累累日息,長大成熟,甘美可食,為我利福。

The autumn orchard — branches bent under golden weight. Dewdrops roll off fruit red as rouge. Baskets pile up along the path before the gate — neighbors share and taste, a time of laughter.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder above heaven ripens into harvest. The original verse reads: 'Peach and plum flower and fruit, hanging heavy day by day; growing large and ripening, sweet and fine and fit to eat, bringing us blessing and profit.' This is nature's own Breakthrough — the gradual swelling from blossom to edible fruit, accumulation reaching the moment of release. From Great Power to Breakthrough, the lake rises above heaven in Guai, moisture gathering until it must fall as rain. The transformation maps onto the ripening exactly: stored energy in the fruit cannot be contained indefinitely; it must be harvested, shared, distributed. The verse's peaches and plums embody Guai's core dynamic — decisive action at the moment of fullness, distributing abundance before it spoils.
