Yilin Verse
顧念所生,隔在東平,遭離滿沸,河川決潰,幸得无恙,復歸相室。
Thinking anxiously of those born to us, separated at Dongping. Caught in the raging flood, the rivers and streams burst their banks. By fortune, no one is harmed; once more they return to the family home.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder above heaven sends a parent's thoughts eastward to Dongping, where a child is separated by rising floodwaters. The river boils and surges, dikes burst and channels overflow — yet through fortune's mercy, all survive unharmed, and the family is reunited at home. The verse moves from anxious separation through natural catastrophe to joyful reunion, a complete emotional arc compressed into six phrases. From Great Power to Abundance, thunder and lightning arrive together in Feng: overwhelming force paired with illuminating clarity. The transformation captures the flood's double nature — destructive power that paradoxically clarifies what matters most. In Abundance, the sage 'does not grieve at midday's zenith'; here, surviving the deluge restores both household and perspective.
