Yilin Verse

學靈三年,聖且明神。先見善祥,嘉吉福慶,餌吉知來,告我无咎。

Studying the numinous for three years; sagely and divinely illumined. Foreseeing auspicious signs; blessed with good fortune and celebration. Consulting the oracle, knowing what is to come; it tells me there is no blame.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire rises above the earth, and after three years of studying the spirit arts, the adept becomes sagely and divinely perceptive. Auspicious signs appear in advance, blessings and good fortune gather, and through ingesting sacred substances one gains foreknowledge of what is to come — 'there will be no blame.' The verse describes a ritual practitioner or diviner whose training has granted genuine insight into the patterns of fate. From Progress to Keeping Still, the transformation clarifies the nature of this wisdom. Twin mountains, perfectly still — thought that does not exceed its proper sphere. The seer who studies for three years does not grasp at omniscience but learns where the boundary of knowledge lies. True divination is stillness recognizing pattern, not ambition seizing control.
