Yilin Verse
君明有德,登天大祿,布政施惠,以感恩福,中子南遊,翱翔未復。
The lord is wise and virtuous; he ascends to heaven’s great blessing. He spreads governance and bestows grace, inspiring gratitude and fortune. The middle son travels south, soaring free and not yet returned.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Fire rises above the earth, and here the sovereign shines with genuine virtue. The lord is brilliant and possesses true merit; he ascends to heaven's great bounty. He spreads governance and bestows favor, moving all to gratitude and blessing. Yet the middle son wanders south and has not returned. The verse opens with an ideal ruler radiating moral clarity, then pivots: even in such an era, someone dear ventures beyond reach. From Progress to Conflict, the transformation captures this tension precisely — heaven and water move in opposite directions. The sovereign advances in brightness, but the absent son travels against the current, and reunion remains elusive. Beneficent rule does not guarantee that all bonds hold.
