Yilin Verse

張狂妄作,與惡相逢。不得所欲,生我獨凶。

Reckless and wild in his doings, he encounters evil on the road. He does not obtain what he desires; misfortune falls on him alone.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind from fire should guide the household with steady purpose, but here recklessness takes command. Acting wildly and recklessly, one encounters evil in return. Desires go unfulfilled, and misfortune falls upon the speaker alone. The verse is a compact parable of self-inflicted disaster: the arrogant person who charges forward without restraint meets opposition of equal violence. The evil encountered is not random — it is the mirror image of the actor's own recklessness. From The Family to Biting Through, fire and thunder combine as lightning illuminates the jaw that bites down on an obstruction. Justice is administered through decisive punishment; the reckless person who disturbs the family order must be bitten through and removed, just as the sage-kings clarified penalties to enforce law.
