Yilin Verse
威權分離,烏夜徘徊。群蔽目光,大人誅傷。
Power and authority are torn apart; crows pace back and forth in the night. The flock blinds all sight; the great man is struck down.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind from fire illuminates the family's governance, but here authority fragments and darkness descends. Power and prestige are split apart; crows circle restlessly in the night. The crowd obscures clear vision, and the great man is harmed and punished. The nocturnal crows suggest ominous forces gathering — in Han-dynasty omen lore, crows roosting at unusual hours signal political treachery. When legitimate authority is divided, predators circle in the darkness and the just ruler becomes a victim. From The Family to Innocence, heaven's thunder moves through all things without error. Innocence means acting in alignment with heaven's spontaneous order. This verse shows what happens when that natural order is violated: the division of authority creates a void where sinister forces thrive and innocence itself is persecuted.
