Yilin Verse

南行出城,世得福祉。王姬歸齊,賴其所欲。

Traveling south out of the city, the age gains its blessings. Princess Wang Ji returns to Qi, obtaining all she desires.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind from fire sends the family forth on an auspicious journey. Traveling south through the city gates, the world receives blessings. A Zhou princess marries into the state of Qi, and she obtains what she desires. The southward direction in Han-dynasty cosmology signals brightness and flourishing; departing through the city gate marks a formal transition. The royal marriage — a princess given in alliance — represents the family's highest diplomatic function: binding states through kinship. From The Family to The Clinging, doubled fire illuminates all directions. The Clinging attaches to what is bright and sustaining; the princess who marries well clings to a worthy match, and her household's light doubles as it joins another. Two fires together illuminate farther than either alone.
