Yilin Verse

禍走患伏,喜為我福。凶惡消亡,災害不作。

Dark clouds scatter to reveal blue sky; a dove calls from the branch announcing clear weather. Snow before the gate has just finished melting — below the steps, new shoots break through the bricks.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind from fire clears the sky after the storm. The original verse reads: 'Calamity retreats and misfortune hides; joy becomes my blessing. Evil and harm vanish; disasters cease to arise.' After a prolonged period of danger, the clouds part and light returns. The verse is a declaration of release — not the arrival of something new, but the withdrawal of everything harmful. The family emerges from crisis into clear air. From The Family to Inner Truth, wind moves above the lake as sincerity reaches the hearts of even the smallest creatures. Inner Truth's power is that genuine faith transforms circumstances without force. The disasters depart not because they are defeated but because the family's inner coherence makes them unsustainable. Sincerity, like wind over water, dissolves what is false.
