Yilin Verse

播天舞地,嘵亂神所,居樂无咎。

Shaking heaven, stirring earth, the spirits' dwelling is thrown into uproar. Yet one dwells in joy, without blame.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind from fire animates the family in exuberant celebration. Broadcasting across heaven and dancing upon earth, the commotion reaches even the dwelling place of spirits — yet the outcome is peaceful and blameless. The scene evokes a ritual performance so ecstatic it shakes heaven and earth: music, dance, and ceremonial clamor that blur the boundary between human and divine. Despite the apparent chaos, the result is 'dwelling in joy without fault.' The frenzy is contained within ritual form. From The Family to After Completion, water sits precisely above fire in perfect functional order. After Completion represents every element in its proper place — the very state this wild ritual produces. The family's ecstatic worship achieves cosmic balance not through restraint but through the total commitment of expressive energy.
