Yilin Verse

鬭戰天門,身有何患?室家具在,不失其歡。

Battling at heaven's gate; what harm could touch this body? House and family remain intact; he does not lose his joy.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire above the lake, and a warrior battles at heaven's gate without sustaining harm. The verse is remarkably confident: though one fights at the threshold of the celestial realm — the highest and most perilous ground imaginable — the body suffers no injury, the household remains intact, and joy is undiminished. The 'gate of heaven' suggests both cosmic and military supremacy, a battle fought on the grandest stage with complete assurance. From Opposition to Progress, fire rises above the earth as the sun emerges from the ground, illuminating all with self-generating brightness. The transformation from estrangement to progress reveals that when one's cause is aligned with heaven's mandate, even the fiercest opposition yields only to advancing light.
