Yilin Verse

南向一室,風雨並入。塵埃積濕,主毋盲痺,偏枯心疾,亂我家資。

A south-facing room; wind and rain pour in together. Dust and grime collect in the damp; the master suffers blindness and paralysis, half the body withered. A sickness of the heart; it disorders my household's resources.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire above the lake, and a south-facing room is invaded by both wind and rain simultaneously. Dust and damp accumulate together, causing the mistress of the house to fall ill with blindness and paralysis — body half-withered, heart afflicted — while the family's wealth is thrown into disorder. The south-facing room should be the most auspicious position in Chinese geomancy, yet here it admits every destructive force at once. When the most protected space is breached, nothing remains secure. From Opposition to Inner Truth, wind moves above the lake, and the gentleman deliberates cases and stays executions. The transformation from violated sanctuary to inner truth suggests that when external defenses fail, the only remaining refuge is the sincerity within — but this verse's occupant has already been broken in both body and spirit.
