Yilin Verse

生宜地乳,上皇大喜。隆我祉福,貴壽无極。

Born from the earth's sweet milk; the Supreme One is greatly pleased. He heaps blessings and fortune upon us; noble longevity without end.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire above the lake, and from this final transformation springs unexpected blessing. Born in a place of nourishing earth-milk — perhaps a geomantic site where the ground itself exudes vitality — the supreme ancestor rejoices greatly. Blessings rain down abundantly, conferring noble rank and longevity without limit. The verse closes the entire cycle of hexagram 38 on an exalted note: after sixty-three transformations through estrangement, the last arrives at transcendent joy. The 'earth-milk' (地乳) recalls sites where landscape concentrates vital energy, and the 'Supreme Sovereign' (上皇) suggests the highest divine authority bestowing favor. From Opposition to Before Completion, fire hovers above water, and the gentleman carefully distinguishes things and assigns them their proper places. The transformation toward the unfinished reminds us that even this benediction stands at the threshold — blessings are promised but the work of completion continues forever.
