Yilin Verse
被服文衣,遊觀酒池。上堂見觴,喜為吾兄,使我憂亡。
Brocade robes and jade belt, strolling through the flower garden. Winding streams carry floating wine cups past the green pavilion. Raising a cup to invite a friend and the sky's moon — falling asleep drunk in the pine breeze without realizing.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water on the mountain obstructs, but this verse (a rewrite) must be read through the original: 'Clad in patterned garments, wandering by the wine pool, ascending the hall to find goblets. Joyful as my elder brother — yet he leaves me without worry.' The original describes a figure in fine robes visiting a lavish feast, encountering a kinsman amid wine and celebration. The joy of reunion is real but fleeting; the parting leaves a hollow absence. From Obstruction to Fellowship, fire blazes beneath heaven as companions gather in open daylight. Fellowship demands the clarity to distinguish true bonds from festive illusions. The wine pool glitters, the robes are splendid, but the brother departs — and what felt like fellowship dissolves into the solitude of one who mistook a banquet for belonging.
