Yilin Verse
牙孽生齒,室蟠啟戶。幽人利貞,鼓翼起舞。
Buds and shoots break through like teeth; coiled in the chamber, the door opens. The hidden one finds benefit in steadfastness, spreading wings and rising to dance.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water on the mountain conceals new growth stirring below. Buds push through where teeth once stood — new life replacing what was old and worn. A door opens in the dark chamber, and the hidden person, who profits from steadfast integrity, beats his wings and begins to dance. The imagery moves from dormancy to awakening: what seemed trapped in the mountain's grip finds an exit. The 'hidden person' (幽人) is a Yi Jing archetype of the sage in seclusion who maintains virtue during dark times. From Obstruction to Contemplation, wind sweeps over the earth as the ruler surveys his realm. The hidden person's emergence into dance mirrors Contemplation's principle: patient observation from within darkness eventually allows one to see — and be seen — with clarity.
