Yilin Verse

羔裘豹祛,東與福遇。駕迎吾兄,送我鸝黃。

In a lambskin coat with leopard-fur cuffs, he meets blessings heading east. Driving the carriage to welcome my brother; he sends me an oriole.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Water on the mountain yields to an auspicious homecoming. Wearing a lamb-skin robe with leopard-fur cuffs — the ceremonial dress of a Shijing nobleman — the speaker travels east and meets good fortune. A carriage is sent to welcome his elder brother, and an oriole is presented as a gift. The lamb-skin robe with leopard trim echoes the Shijing ode 'Gaoqiu' from the Zheng winds, symbolizing the well-appointed official. The oriole (鸝黃) adds a note of spring warmth and beauty. From Obstruction to The Family, wind emerges from fire as the household radiates warmth outward. The blocked mountain road transforms into the avenue leading home, and the traveler arrives not as a refugee but as a returning kinsman welcomed with ceremony and joy.
