Yilin Verse
南至隱域,深潛處匿。聰明閉塞,與死為伍。
Going south to a hidden realm, submerged deep in concealment. Perception and wisdom are sealed shut; dwelling in the company of death.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water on the mountain pushes the speaker into the deepest south, into hidden realms where one crouches in concealment. Perception is sealed off — ears and eyes are blocked — and one keeps company with death itself. The verse describes not merely hiding but burial alive: the senses are shut down, the world disappears, and what remains is indistinguishable from the grave. From Obstruction to The Gentle, doubled wind penetrates softly and persistently. The Gentle's penetrating quality works through patience and subtlety, entering where force cannot reach. The verse's entombment is the extreme condition that The Gentle must address: only the most penetrating, most patient influence can reach someone sealed in a crypt of desolation. The wind finds cracks where nothing else can enter — but first it must know where to look.
