Yilin Verse

黃玉溫厚,君子所服。甘露溽暑,萬物生茂。

Yellow jade, warm and rich; what the noble man wears. Sweet dew in the summer’s heat; the ten thousand things grow and flourish.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

A spring beneath the mountain reveals jade of golden warmth — the kind a gentleman wears close to the body. Sweet dew descends in midsummer heat, and all living things flourish. Yellow jade in Chinese tradition represents inner virtue made visible: warm to the touch, luminous without glare. When heaven sends sweet dew, it confirms that the ruler's virtue has permeated the natural order. From Youthful Folly to Contemplation, the transformation is one of quiet revelation. Wind moves across the earth and the sage-kings observe the people to establish teaching. The naif who wears virtue like warm jade need not seek recognition — the world sees and is nourished, as naturally as plants drink dew.
