Yilin Verse
莫莫輯輯,夜作晝匿。謀議我資,來攻我室。空盡我財,幾無以食。
Whispering, conspiring; working by night, hiding by day. They plot against my goods and come to raid my home. Emptying all my wealth; I nearly have nothing to eat.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
A spring beneath the mountain is silently plundered. In whispered conspiracy, thieves work by night and hide by day. They plot against my wealth, attack my household, empty my stores until nothing is left to eat. The repetition of 'my' — my resources, my home, my food — makes the violation intensely personal. From Youthful Folly to Increase, the irony is devastating. Wind and thunder should enhance and augment; the gentleman sees goodness and moves toward it. Yet here, 'increase' operates in reverse: it is the thieves who increase while the victim decreases. The naif who does not guard what is his discovers that the same energies meant for growth can be hijacked by those who conspire in darkness.
