Yilin Verse

驕胡大形,造惡作凶。无所能成,還自滅身。

The arrogant barbarian, great in form, creates evil and works destruction. Accomplishing nothing in the end, he brings annihilation upon himself.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder over water erupts into thunder charging above heaven — the reckless force of Great Power. An arrogant barbarian of enormous form creates evil and commits violence. Unable to accomplish anything, he ultimately destroys himself. The verse describes raw power without moral direction: the larger the frame, the harder the fall. Aggression unchecked by principle turns inward and becomes self-annihilation. From Deliverance to Great Power, the release from constraint unleashes energy that, without propriety to guide it, becomes catastrophic. Thunder in heaven has tremendous force, but the gentleman must not tread where ritual forbids. Unrestrained power is indistinguishable from self-destruction.
