Trigram Changes
Yilin Verse
有人追亡,鳥言所匿,不旅日得。
Someone pursues a fugitive; a bird's call reveals the hiding place. Before the day is done, the quarry is found.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Mountain above lake transforms into wind above fire — the Family, where inner warmth radiates outward as gentle influence. Someone pursues a fugitive, and a bird's call reveals the hiding place; within a short time the quarry is found. The verse is terse and almost eerie: the bird serves as informant, nature itself conspiring to restore what was lost. From Decrease to the Family, the mountain's restraint dissolves into wind born of fire — warmth generating movement, the household's inner order extending outward. The bird's revelation mirrors the Family hexagram's principle: words must have substance, conduct must be consistent. Nothing remains hidden when the household is properly ordered. Decrease strips away concealment; the Family's warmth illuminates every corner.
